An interlude, or, Heraclitus' River

We Are Rivers

We are made of time.  We are the famed

parable of Heraclitus the Obscure.

We are water not the diamond that endures,

what gets lost, not what finds repose.

We are the river and we are that old Greek

who sees himself in the river.  His reflection

changes in the water of a changing mirror,

in glass that changes just the same as fire.

We’re the vain river on its fated course

toward the sea. Darkness closes in.

Everything says goodbye and flows away.

Memory will never mint its coin.

And nonetheless there’s something that remains.

And nonetheless there’s something that complains.
